Giving Honor Mention
Our story

My name is Francelia James, also known as Shuggamama — The Coffee Cake
Lady.
First and foremost, I give all honor, glory, and praise to God. I know without a shadow of
a doubt that none of this would be possible without Him. It was God who gave me
strength when I felt weary, wisdom when I did not know which way to go, faith when I
could not see what was ahead, and courage to keep moving when it would have been
easier to simply let the dream go.
There were setbacks. There were disappointments. There were seasons of waiting, and
yes, there were moments when I wondered if this dream would ever come back around.
But God, in His faithfulness, kept reminding me that what He placed in my heart was still
there. The vision had not died. The timing had not been missed. It was simply waiting
for its appointed time.
And now, here we are.
I also want to give a very special thank you to my amazing sister, Velda. She stood
beside me from the beginning. We have laughed together, cried together, worked
together, prayed together, and dreamed together. Velda, your love, support, dedication,
and belief in this vision has meant more to me than words can express. I am truly
grateful to have you by my side as we enter this new chapter.
Today, I also want to honor the memory of my late husband, Stephen James.
Stephen received a coffee cake recipe and tweaked it making it unique. He was more
than a husband. He was my partner, my encourager, and a true believer in this vision.
Together, Stephen and I were the team behind what has now become ShuggaMama’s
Coffee Cake.
Stephen believed in the dream. He helped lay the foundation, put his hands to the work,
and shared the vision of building something special, something that would bring families
and communities together.
Although Stephen is no longer physically here to see this next chapter, his love, spirit,
and vision remain part of everything Shuggamama does. Every cake baked, every
customer served, and every new door that opens carries a piece of the legacy he
helped create.
The journey continues. The vision lives on.
Years ago, our story was featured in the Los Angeles Sentinel in an article titled “It’s All
About the Coffee Cake,” published July 26, 2012. At that time, our company was
known as the Cinnamon Brown Shugga Company, and our coffee cake had made its
way into more than 33 7-Eleven stores.
Circumstances changed, and that chapter of the business came to an end. But our
story did not end there.
We took time to heal. We continued believing. We refined our recipes. We learned from
the journey, and most importantly, we never allowed the dream to die.
Now, after many years, we are preparing to return under a new name and with a
renewed purpose:
ShuggaMamas — The Coffee Cake Lady.
Although we are currently based in Texas, our vision reaches far beyond where we call
home. We are preparing to grow ShuggaMamas beyond our local community, shipping
our desserts wherever they are desired and introducing a new generation, near and far,
to the coffee cake that started this incredible journey.
This moment is exciting, but it is also bittersweet because I wish Stephen could be
standing here with us to see the vision come full circle. But in my heart, I know that what
he helped plant is still growing.
This is more than a business.
This is more than a coffee cake.
This is faith.
This is family.
This is perseverance.
This is love.
This is legacy.
And this is proof that a dream may be delayed, but delay does not mean denial.
Sometimes a dream simply waits quietly, patiently, for its appointed time to bloom.
So today, I say thank you to God for carrying us.
Thank you to my sister, Velda, for standing beside me.
And thank you to my late husband, Stephen James, for believing in the vision and
helping build its foundation.
As ShuggaMamas begins this next chapter, we will carry Stephen's memory with us and
continue building upon the vision the three of us shared.
Same recipe. Bigger purpose. Brighter tomorrow.
And from my heart, I thank everyone who has supported us, believed in us, purchased a
cake, shared our story, prayed for us, or encouraged us along the way.
The Coffee Cake Lady never left. She simply evolved—and now, the world is ready to
meet her again.
More than a dessert… it’s a memory.
More than a business… it’s a legacy.
Thank you for being a part of this journey. May God richly bless each and every
one of you.
